DUNE

Stunning visuals effects and art direction steal the show in Denis Villeneuve’s comly adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Sci-fy epic. Notable performances include Zendaya, Oscar Issac, Javier Bardem and Jason Momoa. Prepare for a sequel.

NIGHTMARE ALLEY

Cinema alchemist Guillermo Del Toro paints a creepy masterpiece with this moody remake of a classic noir flick involving a hustler who cons his way into carnival fame and aligns schemes with a dangerous fem fatale. Cate Blanchett evokes a perfect homage to the classic Hollywood starlet with notable performances by Willem DaFoe and Rooney Mara. (So happy to have seen this in a theater for a limited, black-and-white release.)

DON’T LOOK UP

Adam McKay’s hilarious dark comedy about a pair of astronomers who have to warn the world of an impending comet that will destroy the planet. Yes, it’s dark. Yes, it’s funny. Yes the pairing of Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio works. Yes, Meryl Streep may have given our funniest cinema President. Yes, yes and more yes. Hang this one in the hall of fame with Dr. Strangelove.

POWER OF THE DOG

This beautifully-shot Western by Jane Campion tells the story of a hardened rancher who causes stress to his brother’s new wife and child, until dark secrets are unearthed. Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons are outstanding, as they were in the fifth season of FARGO (Ed & Peggy Blumquist).
